Proposed changes in this pull request

Resolves wso2/product-is#28639

Adds two built-in conditional authentication (adaptive script) templates for AI agents, in a new AI Agents category of the script editor:

  • AI Agent Blocking (aiAgentBlocking.json): denies sign-in when the request comes from an AI agent. Browser flows get an error page through sendError. API-based (app-native) flows (response_mode=direct) use fail(), so the client receives an authentication failure instead of an empty authenticator prompt.
  • AI Agent Human-in-the-Loop (aiAgentHumanInTheLoop.json): runs the first login step, then requires a human-only verification step (passkey by default) when an AI agent is detected.
  • categories.json: new AIAgents category (order 5).

Both templates identify agents through Web Bot Auth (HTTP Message Signatures, draft-ietf-webbotauth-httpsig-protocol). detectAgent(context) returns true when the request carries a Signature-Agent header, or a Signature-Input header with tag="web-bot-auth". Admins can extend detectAgent() with other identification methods, which are described in the docs.

No loader or packaging changes are needed. p2.inf already copies the whole authenticationTemplates folder, and loadAuthenticationTemplates() picks up new files and categories.

Testing (on a 7.4.0-SNAPSHOT pack):

  • GET /api/server/v1/applications/meta/adaptive-auth-templates lists the AI Agents category with both templates. Applying each template sets up the expected steps.
  • Normal browser and app-native sign-ins complete as usual.
  • Requests carrying Web Bot Auth headers:
    • With the Blocking template, they are denied at /oauth2/authorize with the error page (browser), or with ABA-60002 (app-native).
    • With the Human-in-the-Loop template, they require step 2.
  • A real ChatGPT agent session (agent mode) sends signed requests. It was blocked at /oauth2/authorize, and its signatures verified against https://chatgpt.com/.well-known/http-message-signatures-directory.

Developer Checklist (Mandatory)

  • Complete the Developer Checklist in the related product-is issue to track any behavioral change or migration impact.

Checklist (for reviewing)

General

  • Is this PR explained thoroughly? All code changes must be accounted for in the PR description.
  • Is the PR labeled correctly?

Functionality

  • Are all requirements met? Compare implemented functionality with the requirements specification.
  • Does the UI work as expected? There should be no Javascript errors in the console; all resources should load. There should be no unexpected errors. Deliberately try to break the feature to find out if there are corner cases that are not handled.

Code

  • Do you fully understand the introduced changes to the code? If not ask for clarification, it might uncover ways to solve a problem in a more elegant and efficient way.
  • Does the PR introduce any inefficient database requests? Use the debug server to check for duplicate requests.
  • Are all necessary strings marked for translation? All strings that are exposed to users via the UI must be marked for translation.

Tests

  • Are there sufficient test cases? Ensure that all components are tested individually; models, forms, and serializers should be tested in isolation even if a test for a view covers these components.
  • If this is a bug fix, are tests for the issue in place? There must be a test case for the bug to ensure the issue won’t regress. Make sure that the tests break without the new code to fix the issue.
  • If this is a new feature or a significant change to an existing feature? has the manual testing spreadsheet been updated with instructions for manual testing?

Security

  • Confirm this PR doesn't commit any keys, passwords, tokens, usernames, or other secrets.
  • Are all UI and API inputs run through forms or serializers?
  • Are all external inputs validated and sanitized appropriately?
  • Does all branching logic have a default case?
  • Does this solution handle outliers and edge cases gracefully?
  • Are all external communications secured and restricted to SSL?

Documentation

  • Are changes to the UI documented in the platform docs? If this PR introduces new platform site functionality or changes existing ones, the changes should be documented.
  • Are changes to the API documented in the API docs? If this PR introduces new API functionality or changes existing ones, the changes must be documented.
  • Are reusable components documented? If this PR introduces components that are relevant to other developers (for instance a mixin for a view or a generic form) they should be documented in the Wiki.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Add two built-in adaptive authentication templates under a new "AI Agents"
category that identify AI agents through Web Bot Auth (the Signature-Agent and
Signature-Input headers that agents such as ChatGPT agent send):

- AI-Agent-Blocking denies sign-in to detected agents. Browser flows get an
error page via sendError; API-based (app-native) flows use fail() so the
  client receives an authentication failure.
- AI-Agent-Human-in-the-Loop requires a passkey step when an agent is detected,
so a human has to complete the sign-in.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds two AI-agent authentication templates. One blocks detected agents. The other requires a human-only authentication step when an agent is detected. Adds an AI Agents category with display name, order, and icon path.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 3050a

This change adds two opt-in AI-agent authentication templates and a category entry. The earlier detection-matching concern has been addressed, and no merge-blocking issue remains.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to f7c21

The change adds optional sign-in policies with bounded application-level effects. Detection covers self-identifying automated clients, not all automation. Enforcement also depends on header forwarding and secure second-factor configuration; header normalization and failover behavior remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The direct security effect concerns sign-in attempts for applications using these policies: matching requests are denied or require another factor. The inspected changes add policy definitions, not broader service privileges or datastore authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — A client can omit the declaration headers and follow the ordinary step-1 path. This is an explicit coverage limit of the new policies, whose summaries restrict detection to self-identifying clients and whose prerequisites require custom detection for others; it is not established as a regression from the base.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The policies depend on proxies forwarding detection headers. They also assume lower-case header keys, but the framework copies servlet header names verbatim and performs exact map lookups. Whether supported ingress paths guarantee normalization remains unresolved; a production case-variation bypass was not established.
  • observed — The human-verification guarantee depends on administrator configuration: step 2 must require human participation and must not allow progressive enrollment that lets an automated client enroll its own device. The template documents this prerequisite rather than enforcing it in its script.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Static inspection supports rejection on both blocking branches and preservation of detection state across callbacks. The non-GraalJS implementation also persists and restores bindings and attaches a failure node on callback exceptions. Deployment-specific cache serialization and failover behavior were not runtime-validated.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Remove reliance on container-specific header casing by normalizing detection keys or using case-insensitive matching, and validate mixed-case headers through supported ingress paths. This is defense in depth, not a verified production vulnerability.

Explanation

Issue #28639 requires two built-in templates in a new AI Agents category. The PR adds both templates and registers category AIAgents with order 5. The blocking template uses sendError for non-direct requests and fail with access_denied for response_mode=direct. The human-in-the-loop template runs step 1 and runs FIDOAuthenticator as step 2 when detection succeeds. Both templates support Signature-Agent and an exact tag="web-bot-auth" parameter in Signature-Input. Both templates expose detectAgent() for administrator extension. The issue's guide and checklist are documentation or administrative work, not coding requirements for this assessment.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reviewed changes are limited to the two AI-agent authentication templates and the category registration. The scripts, default authenticators, detection logic, and user-facing template metadata directly implement issue #28639. The empty helpLink is consistent with the stated documentation follow-up. No unrelated code or configuration change is present in the reviewed diff.

Explanation

The description explains the templates, detection logic, behavior, testing, linked issue, documentation dependency, and follow-up work. However, it does not follow the repository template and omits several required sections, including explicit goals, user stories, release note, documentation status, security checks, test environment, training, certification, marketing, samples, migrations, and learning.

Resolution

Retain the existing technical details, then add the repository template sections and complete each applicable section. Mark non-applicable sections as N/A with a brief reason. Include explicit goals, user stories, release-note text, documentation status and docs PR link, security-check results, test environment details, automation-test coverage, and migration impact.

Detect Signature-Input only when it carries the tag="web-bot-auth"
parameter, instead of any occurrence of the text (for example in a nonce,
keyid or a different tag value). The Signature-Agent check is unchanged.
