Purpose

A selection is a gateway's standing choice: whatever it leaves out stays left out on later applies. That is right when someone chooses it for that gateway, but not when an apply leaves a change out for another reason. Promoting what one environment runs into another leaves out what the first holds back, and that is the first environment's choice, not the second's. Kept as the second's, the change stays held back there after the first starts running it. An apply can now skip changes for that one apply.

Approach

  • ApplyRequest.skip lists change keys to leave alone in this apply only. They are neither written nor removed, and the gateway's standing choice for them is not touched: not made when it had none, and kept when it had one.
  • A skipped change is owed to the gateway. The version is recorded as applied, so the versions alone would never show the change again (a skipped removal would be in neither version, a skipped add would read as unchanged). The skipped resources are kept in GATEWAY_EXCLUDED_RESOURCE with ONCE = TRUE, beside the standing choice, and every diff offers them again with skipped: true: as updated while the version carries the resource, as deleted once no version names it. The apply that writes or removes one clears it, after the version is recorded, so a failed apply leaves it owed. A selection that leaves an owed change out turns it into the standing choice; a standing choice is never turned into a one-time one.
  • selection decides the changes that are not skipped, as before. A skip naming a change that changes nothing skips nothing.
  • A skip key the diff does not report, or one the selection also names, is refused with 400 (GTW-1025), like a stale selection; the message now names both the selection and the skip.
  • The choice logic moves into one helper, choose, which write calls.
  • The API spec and the configuration versions guide describe skip and skipped.

Schema change

GATEWAY_EXCLUDED_RESOURCE gains ONCE BOOLEAN NOT NULL DEFAULT FALSE, both databases. The table has not shipped in a release, so a released install is unaffected. A development database is brought up to date with, on either database:

ALTER TABLE "GATEWAY_EXCLUDED_RESOURCE" ADD COLUMN ONCE BOOLEAN NOT NULL DEFAULT FALSE;

Checklist

  • Followed the contribution guidelines.
  • Manual test round performed and verified: the gateway integration package and the backend unit tests, lint and i18n check were run locally for this revision (make pr_checks backend parts); the gateway suite applies versions to the server itself.

    • Ran Vale and fixed all errors and warnings
  • Tests provided. (Add links if there are any)
    • Unit Tests: an apply the gateway wrote nothing of leaves an owed change owed even when its selection made it the standing choice (the test store applies the same ONCE = held AND new rule as the upsert); a skipped change is not written and not kept as the choice but owed, offered again as updated and skipped, written by the next apply and then owed no longer; a skipped removal is recorded, offered again as deleted and skipped, kept through a dry run and removed by the next apply; a skip of an unchanged resource or in a dry run owes nothing; a selection turns an owed change into the standing choice; a skip keeps a choice the gateway already has, with a selection deciding the rest; a skip naming nothing, or a change also selected, is refused and nothing reaches the gateway; the store writes the flag.
    • Integration Tests: gateway/ an owed change a later selection leaves out becomes the standing choice (runs the upsert's conflict rule on the database); a skipped unit is left out of the apply, offered again as updated and skipped, written by the next apply and then unchanged; a skipped removal is recorded as applied, offered again as deleted and skipped, and gone from the diff once an apply takes it (sqlite).

📝 Walkthrough

Apply requests can skip reported changes for one apply. Skipped resources remain owed and reappear in later diffs until handled or left out through a selection. The API reports this state with Change.skipped.

Changes: Apply-time change skipping

Layer / File(s) Summary
Skip contract and exclusion storage
backend/internal/gateway/version_model.go, api/gateway.yaml, backend/dbscripts/configdb/*.sql, backend/internal/gateway/version_store.go, backend/internal/gateway/version_store_test.go
ApplyRequest adds a skip list, and Change adds a skipped flag. Database exclusion records store an ONCE value to distinguish one-apply skips from standing exclusions.
Skip validation, diffing, and apply lifecycle
backend/internal/gateway/version_exclusions.go, backend/internal/gateway/version_service.go
The service validates skip and selection keys, omits left-alone resources from import content, and marks owed changes in later diffs. After successful version recording, it clears owed resources that the apply no longer leaves alone.
Skip behavior validation and documentation
backend/internal/gateway/version_exclusions_test.go, tests/integration/gateway/gateway_versions_test.go, backend/internal/gateway/version_error_constants.go, backend/internal/system/i18n/core/defaults.go, docs/content/guides/declarative-configurations/configuration-versions.mdx
Tests cover skipped additions and removals, dry runs, invalid choices, and transitions between owed and standing exclusions. The API error descriptions and guide document skip behavior.

Review notes. The process checks pass: one commit, the label is set and the body follows the template. I read the diff and the head files, but I did not run the tests.

Should fix

  1. A skipped removal is lost once the apply is recorded. A skip is not kept as a standing choice, but write still records the target version through SetApplied. plan works out removals by diffing the target against the version the gateway holds, so after recording, a skipped removal is no longer in any later diff. deletionsOf also leaves it out because it is flagged Excluded. The resource stays on the gateway and is never offered for removal again, which contradicts "the next apply offers them as before". write already handles the same hazard for failed removals ("a version whose removals did not all succeed is not recorded"). A skipped removal needs similar treatment: don't record the version, or keep the skipped removals owed.

  2. A skipped add or modify shows as unchanged in the next diff. The unit test passes only because the full version content is sent on every apply. The next apply does write the resource, but its diff and summary report it as unchanged, which is misleading for a promotion flow that reads the diff.

Nits and questions

  1. There is no test that skips a deleted change (it would have caught point 1). There is also no dry-run test with skip, and no check that a skipped change is listed as pending afterwards.
  2. An invalid skip returns ErrorInvalidSelection (GTW-1025). The message may mention only "selection", so it may confuse a caller with a bad skip key.
  3. skip accepts the key of an unchanged change. The resource is then stripped from the content and marked Excluded in the response. Is that intended?
  4. The manual test round has no evidence attached, and make pr_checks is not mentioned.

Thanks, both points were right, and they share a cause: once the target version is recorded, a skipped change is in neither side of the next diff (a removal) or on both sides unchanged (an add or an update). Addressed in 8b1f452e6:

  1. A skipped change is now owed to the gateway. The version is still recorded, but the skipped resources are kept in GATEWAY_EXCLUDED_RESOURCE with a new ONCE flag beside the standing choice. Every diff offers them again with skipped: true: as deleted once no version names the resource, as updated while the version carries it (what the gateway holds of it is not known, so updated rather than added). The apply that writes or removes one clears it, after the version is recorded, so a failed apply leaves it owed; a dry run owes nothing. A selection that leaves an owed change out turns it into the standing choice, and a standing choice is never turned into a one-time one. restoreExclusions puts owed rows back the same way it puts the choice back when an import wrote nothing.
  2. A skipped add or update no longer reads as unchanged: see above, it is offered as updated and skipped.
  3. Tests added: a skipped removal is recorded, offered again as deleted and skipped, survives a dry run and is removed by the next apply (unit and integration); a skipped add is offered again as updated and skipped, written by the next apply and then unchanged (unit and integration); a dry run with skip owes nothing; a skip of an unchanged resource; a selection turning an owed change into the standing choice; the store writes the flag.
  4. GTW-1025 now reads "The selection or skip names a resource this apply does not report", and the description says a change cannot be both selected and skipped.
  5. A skip key naming an unchanged change is now taken and skips nothing: there is nothing to leave out, so the resource is neither stripped nor marked. Documented in the guide and the spec.
  6. The body now says what was run for this revision: the gateway integration package, the backend unit tests, lint and the i18n check locally; the schema change section carries the ALTER TABLE.

One more in ff907a28c: a skip of a resource whose key, id or name is too long for the columns that keep what is owed is refused with GTW-1025, as a selection leaving it out already was, instead of failing on the insert. Unit test added.

Thanks for the update. The earlier points are resolved. Two things remain; I read the diff but did not run the tests.

Should fix

  1. restoreExclusions cannot put an owed change back. Its comment says that what a selection turned from owed into left alone is owed again after an import that wrote nothing. The restore sends the old row with Once: true through queryExclude, whose conflict clause sets ONCE = existing.ONCE AND new.ONCE. After the selection, the existing row is standing (false), so false AND true stays false. The resource stays left alone for good instead of owed. Restoring needs to set ONCE explicitly, or delete and re-insert the row. No test covers restoreExclusions with owed rows, and the store tests are mock-only, so the upsert expression itself is never run against SQLite.

  2. The schema change has no upgrade path. ONCE is added only to the CREATE TABLE in postgres.sql and sqlite.sql, and the repo has no migration scripts. A database that already has GATEWAY_EXCLUDED_RESOURCE will fail every gateway version query on the missing column, starting with the read query GTV_MGT-09. Has this table shipped in a release? If so, it needs an upgrade script or a breaking-change note. The checklist currently says there are no breaking changes.

Thanks. Both addressed in 44b15f0f5:

  1. Restoring an owed change. Right: the restore went through the same upsert, and false AND true kept the row standing. Now SetExcluded removes the include keys first and then writes the excludes, in one transaction, and restoreExclusions removes every row the failed apply touched and writes back the ones held before exactly as they were, ONCE included. Nothing else calls SetExcluded with a key in both lists, so the normal paths are unchanged. Tests: a unit test where a selection turned an owed change standing and the import wrote nothing, after which the change is owed again (the test store now applies the same ONCE = held AND new rule as the conflict clause and the same remove-then-write order, so it is no longer more forgiving than the database); and an integration test, against the real database, where an owed change is left out by a later selection and becomes the standing choice, which runs the conflict rule itself.
  2. Upgrade path. GATEWAY_EXCLUDED_RESOURCE has not shipped: it arrived on main on 2026-10-06 (c38baac), after the last release, v1.0.1 (2026-08-25), so no released install has the table and this is not a breaking change for users. The repo keeps no upgrade scripts (the dbscripts are the bootstrap schema). A development database that already has the table takes the ALTER TABLE in the PR body's schema change section.
