Adds integrations/goose-agent-middleware: AMW as a Goose StreamableHttp MCP extension that proxies @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem (read_text_file, write_file), plus a required Goose PreToolUse deny hook.
Idempotency key: verified caller + tool + canonical args hash + agent-session-id. The G1 gate (Goose 1.56.0 @ c3bfc5f, protocol 2026-07-28) showed agent-tool-call-request-id changes when the model retries, so it is logged only. There is a bounded replay window, AMW_IDEMPOTENCY_WINDOW_SECONDS (default 600), documented in the README. A failed_unknown call is never re-run. The fault injection lives only in the test-only tests/e2e/fault_proxy.py.
Real Goose sessions (goose-cli 1.56.0, protocol 2026-07-28):
List + call: write and read succeed through the proxy.
Cut after commit, then a retry with a new request id: one completed receipt plus one replayed, and ledger executions=1.
No permit: the hook blocks the call before it reaches the proxy (no proxy receipt). Goose shows: "Tool call denied by policy hook amw-permit: AMW permit denied: no permit for write_file on …outside.txt: outside every permitted folder."
All 8 receipts verify with Ed25519.
Lost upstream response: failed_unknown. The retry is refused ("AMW refused to re-run … failed_unknown"), and executions=1.
Unit tests need no external data. The only fixture is the real gate call log.
Note
High Risk
New governed filesystem write path with auth, permit policy, and strict idempotency semantics; misconfiguration or ledger edge cases could block retries or allow/deny the wrong paths.
Overview
Introduces integrations/goose-agent-middleware: Agent Middleware as a Goose StreamableHttp MCP extension that proxies pinned @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem (read_text_file, write_file), with a matching goose-amw-hook PreToolUse deny path and a sample plugin/amw-permit wiring for amw__* tools.
Each proxied call follows permit → idempotency (writes) → upstream invoke → Ed25519 receipt. Path rules are enforced in the proxy and hook; callers are verified via Bearer tokens mapped in AMW_CALLERS. Writes require agent-session-id and dedupe on caller + tool + canonical args hash + session (not agent-tool-call-request-id, which changes on Goose retries). A SQLite ledger applies a bounded replay window, refuses automatic retries for failed_unknown, and rolls back claims on pre-dispatch failures.
Packaging adds goose-amw-proxy / goose-amw-hook entrypoints, README and Apache license, pytest coverage anchored on the real G1 gate call log, plus test-only fault injection for cut-stream and lost-response scenarios.

This change adds a Python package that integrates Goose with an MCP Streamable HTTP proxy and a pre-tool hook. The proxy verifies callers, checks path-based permits, routes filesystem tools, and uses a SQLite ledger to replay completed writes or refuse writes with uncertain outcomes. Ed25519 receipts record and sign decisions and outcomes. The package also adds plugin and installation configuration, documentation, unit tests, and end-to-end test utilities.
Bump the default filesystem server to 2.0.1 and treat write_file error results as an unknown outcome before merging. Otherwise a failed overwrite can be reported as having no effect and automatically retried, and the default server version carries a known upstream symlink-swap issue.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 80694
Local binding, authentication, and repeated permit checks limit exposure. However, path containment still depends on the filesystem server, and error classification can allow retries after a partially applied write.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: The newly introduced filesystem boundary authorizes a resolved path but forwards the original path to the pinned upstream. The retained traversal finding exposes a check-to-use containment gap when an attacker can substitute path components. Bearer authentication, loopback defaults, and rejection of ordinary traversal limit reachability but do not establish atomic containment at the filesystem sink.
Medium · reliability · inferred: A post-dispatch MCP error result is classified as a definite no-effect failure, recorded as failed, and permitted to execute again. Earlier inspection of the pinned upstream describes an in-place overwrite that can leave partial content. Consequently, an error response does not establish the no-effect precondition required by the retry lifecycle, weakening uncertain-write containment and the meaning of signed outcomes.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated authority is filesystem access through an authenticated tool caller. A path-race attack additionally depends on control over mutable filesystem components. If upstream containment is bypassed, exposure can extend beyond policy folders to files accessible to the subprocess's OS identity; the supplied deployment evidence does not establish fs_root as a hard confinement boundary.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The retained traversal finding maps to a newly introduced authorization-to-sink dependency: a path passes resolution-based authorization, changes before use, and is subsequently consumed as its original string by the filesystem server. Ordinary traversal rejection is counterevidence against a simple lexical bypass, not against this substitution path.
inferred — An upstream write can have partial effects yet return an error. Mapping that response to failed rather than failed_unknown permits another execution and signs an outcome whose documented no-effect meaning is unsupported. The inspected definite-failure test verifies retryability of a manually assigned state, not the filesystem server's no-effect guarantee.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The proxy independently enforces permits after bearer verification, so omitting the client-side hook does not remove authorization. Token digests use constant-time comparison. The hook template blocks on failure, while resolved-path checks reject paths outside every matching rule.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Failures before dispatch restore the previous claim, while transport exceptions and cancellation after dispatch enter failed_unknown. Inspected tests specify refusal after unknown outcomes and restart, and the fault launcher drops a response after the real write. These checks support the transport-loss path but do not resolve partial-effect error classification.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Establish containment at the actual filesystem operation using a verified upstream implementation and appropriate OS confinement. Keep policy, credentials, signing keys, and replay state outside tool-writable folders so a containment failure cannot also rewrite the controls.
proposed — Treat post-dispatch write errors as unknown unless the upstream provides an explicit, supported no-effect guarantee. Define operator recovery and state-preservation requirements before using concurrent instances or rolling back a deployment.

Classify initialization failures as definite upstream failures.
session.initialize() runs before session.call_tool(), but its exceptions reach Gateway._run as generic exceptions. _run records failed_unknown, so the ledger permanently refuses the same permitted write even though the filesystem tool never ran.

Scope OK: only integrations/goose-agent-middleware/ is touched. The key is caller + tool + canonical args hash + session id (canonical.py:19-33). The request id is only logged/stored as first_request_id and is not part of the key. The window comes from AMW_IDEMPOTENCY_WINDOW_SECONDS with default 600 (proxy.py:104, ledger.py:24). The args hash uses canonical_json, and the key-order test passes. CI is green.
FAIL, real-data rule:
integrations/goose-agent-middleware/tests/test_core.py:39: the 'content': 'G1 gate' argument is invented, because the recorded fixture has no content. The 'real G1 gate evidence' test ends up hashing made-up args. Take the args from the recording, or drop the claim.
test_core.py:20-27, 53-87, 90-110: synthetic values ('c', 's', 'k', 'h', 'r1', 'sha256:x', /tmp/amw-allowed, /etc/x). Derive them from g1_gate_calls.jsonl or label these as pure unit tests in line with repo policy.
Non-blocking: proxy.py:155 falls back to session_id "" when agent-session-id is missing, so every sessionless identical write from one caller dedupes for 600s. Consider refusing a write that has no session id.

Delta since 0392a06: (1) the gate retry test hashes only the recorded {path} (test_core.py:25, :72). (2) Test values all come from g1_gate_calls.jsonl or are made at runtime (uuid4, secrets.token_hex, tmp_path). What's left is API vocabulary (amw__ prefix, decision/outcome names, temp filenames) plus the recorded protocol string at :66. Nothing invented. (3) proxy.py:176-189 refuses a write with no agent-session-id: it issues a signed decision=refuse/not_run receipt before keying and raises ToolError. test_core.py:175-203 checks that upstream never runs and that the receipt verifies. The key is unchanged and reads keep their path. CI green.

Startup failure: proxy.py:86 sets dispatched only after stdio and ClientSession setup (initialize). A failure before that point raises UpstreamNotDispatched. In proxy.py:228-234, _run then calls ledger.release() (ledger.py:103-119), which restores the prior row or deletes a new one, and issues a not_dispatched receipt. Tests: test_core.py:266, :284, and :295 (a real child process that exits before initialize).
verify_caller negative tests: test_core.py:236 (missing and wrong tokens) and :252 (the upstream is never reached).
Denied path through the gateway: test_core.py:303 goes through Gateway.handle and checks that no ledger row is written and the receipt says not_run.
Pin: FS_SERVER_PACKAGE is @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem@2.0.1, and npm view confirms 2.0.1 is a published version. It can be overridden with AMW_FS_SERVER_PACKAGE.
Write error: proxy.py:235-245 records failed_unknown and issues a failed_unknown receipt. The retry is refused. test_core.py:325 asserts the upstream was called once.
Paths: permits.py:32 denies any non-absolute path, including ~, before resolve(). Test: test_core.py:342.
Close error after the answer: proxy.py:89 keeps res when the teardown error is an Exception. Without a result the error is treated as unknown. Tests: test_core.py:385 and :392.
Real data: the tests use W fixture values, fresh() ids, tmp_path and sys.executable. No invented hosts, ports or clocks.
CI: all checks pass (the Node matrix job was skipped).
Local run: not done. pip can't resolve amw-sdk>=0.4.0 from PyPI on this machine, so I'm relying on CI for the goose-agent-middleware matrix (3.11-3.14).
Non-blocking:
ledger.py:112-115: release() deletes only an in_flight row, then re-inserts claim.previous. If the row was changed by something else in the meantime, the INSERT raises an IntegrityError, which would replace the "safe to retry" ToolError. Consider INSERT OR REPLACE guarded by the claim's token, or catch the error and log it.
