Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • OAuth endpoints now return the request’s correlation ID in responses, making requests easier to trace.
    • Diagnostic logs use more consistent identifier labels across authentication, identity providers, flows, and other services, improving readability when investigating issues.

📝 Walkthrough

OAuth routes now apply correlation-ID middleware. Flow events use the request trace ID as their event trace identifier, while event data retains the execution ID. Backend logs use shared or consistently capitalized identifier keys. Authentication, routing, and other logged operations retain their existing behavior.

Changes: OAuth correlation IDs

Layer / File(s) Summary
Correlation middleware on OAuth routes
backend/internal/oauth/jwks/*, backend/internal/oauth/oauth2/{authz,ciba,callback,dcr,discovery,introspect,logout,par,revocation,token,userinfo}/*
OAuth routes pass requests through correlation-ID middleware. Route tests check that responses carry the supplied correlation ID.

Flow observability

Layer / File(s) Summary
Flow event trace IDs and log keys
backend/internal/flow/flowexec/*, backend/internal/flow/executor/*, backend/internal/flow/graphbuilder/graph_builder.go, backend/internal/flow/mgt/inference.go, backend/internal/flow/session/service.go, backend/internal/system/log/constants.go
Flow events use ctx.TraceID as the event trace identifier. Flow and node log fields use shared or updated identifier keys. Tests expect the request trace ID.

Structured log key updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Authentication and identity-provider log keys
backend/internal/authn/*, backend/internal/authnprovider/*, backend/internal/idp/*, backend/internal/entity/service.go, backend/internal/flow/executor/account_linking_executor.go, backend/internal/flow/executor/utils.go, backend/internal/oauth/oauth2/logout/service.go, backend/internal/system/log/constants.go
Authentication and identity-provider logs use shared IDP keys. Related entity and client identifier fields use shared or revised keys.
Domain identifier log keys
backend/internal/connection/value_capture.go, backend/internal/design/resolve/service.go, backend/internal/entitytype/service.go, backend/internal/gateway/*, backend/internal/notificationtemplate/service.go, backend/internal/ou/handler.go, backend/internal/oauth/oauth2/clientauth/clientouadmission.go, backend/internal/resource/service.go, backend/internal/role/*, backend/internal/system/importer/delete_runtime.go, backend/internal/user/service.go
Logs use revised identifier keys for domain operations. Logged values and control flow are unchanged.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a31dc

For requests with opaque correlation IDs, flow events may appear under a different OTel trace, making request-to-flow troubleshooting unreliable. Restore an OTel-compatible event trace ID before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 737a7

The inspected changes preserve authentication controls and durable flow identity. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Risk remains low because external tracing and log consumers may depend on the previous identifier semantics, and their compatibility has not been verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is backend telemetry across OAuth requests and flow events. The inspected changes do not add an authenticated capability or replace execution-state ownership with request tracing identity.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — Nonempty caller-supplied tracing headers reach request context, response headers, and access-log messages without middleware-level format validation. That production path predates this PR. The new flow-event TraceID semantics also inherit request tracing input, but durable execution and principal fields remain separate; this does not establish a new authorization bypass.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — CIBA, introspection, PAR, revocation, and token routes retain client-authentication middleware inside the new correlation wrapper. Correlation processing does not substitute for client identity enforcement.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Inspected publisher and subscriber paths do not use TraceID to own mutable flow state. Together with retained execution identifiers and attempt metadata, this limits the likelihood that changing request traces strands or merges execution lifecycle state. External aggregators were not inspected.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate external security-monitoring consumers against both identifier versions during rollout and rollback. Use execution_id or correlation_id for cross-request flow joins, and never treat caller-selectable TraceID as authenticated identity.

GetActor still doesn't accept ctx, so item 4 in #5566 isn't addressed here. Are we handling it separately?

Adding ctx to GetActor is a breaking change so I kept it out for now for the patch/minor release. Is it ok to make that change? @ThaminduDilshan

We can do this change in the main branch. If you're okay to keep it out, it's fine to skip that in this PR as well or can even take it to a followup

I am ok with the change. Adding ctx to actor provider methods.

Seems this is not fully fixed. ctx is shadowed with context.Background() at actorprovider/service.go:136. Also GetActor, GetActorGroups and GetTransitiveGroupAncestors don't pass ctx to the entity provider, so logs there still don't have trace_id.

Isn't nodeID already added to this logger with logger. With at line 157? Same in skipToNextNode. Shall we remove these?

Seems this is not fixed in setNodeExecutor. The logger passed from executeNodePackage already has nodeID, so lines 519, 529, 534 and 540 add it again. Shall we add it to the logger in isSegmentRestartAllowed instead?

🟡 Minor · Keep opaque request IDs out of Event.TraceID. · engine.go:1443

backend/internal/flow/flowexec/engine.go:1443
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep opaque request IDs out of Event.TraceID.

X-Correlation-ID accepts arbitrary values. The changed flow event constructors pass that value to Event.TraceID, but the OTel subscriber parses it as hexadecimal. An opaque value such as trace-abcd therefore causes OTel to create a different trace ID and breaks request-to-event trace correlation. Use the generated flow ExecutionID for Event.TraceID, as before, and keep ctx.TraceID for request correlation and logging.

Suggested fix

Apply the same change to the other flow and node event constructors in this file.

Isn't the whole mux already wrapped with CorrelationIDMiddleware in createHTTPServer (cmd/server/main.go:258)? Then these per route wrappers aren't needed. Same in dcr and the other oauth2 init.go files. My earlier comment on the callback was wrong.

This is not the case when mux comes from thunderidengine. Either the embedders wraps the mux with that middleware or it has to be done per route wise. @ThaminduDilshan
