I still have doubts that Objective-C is really needed, afaik, objc functions can be called from C getting the function pointers.

Technically, we could avoid direct ObjC syntax by using objc_getClass and similar runtime wrappers, but it comes with significant downsides: much worse readability, very fragile objc_msgSend casts and harder class/delegate/view-controller setup. A particularly important limitation is blocks: many modern UIKit/Foundation APIs use Objective-C blocks, and those are really awkward to handle cleanly from plain C.
