Performance tracing & monitoring throughout the codebase

Add fine-grained performance tracing and monitoring support throughout the codebase:

• Use tracing throughout the codebase
• Build a performance monitoring frontend with statistics, visualization, diagnosis, etc.
• Look into OpenTelemetry tooling
• Proper tooling support for all of these
