Approved from me. Codex raised two concerns;
- That the
createdandmodifieddates are not automatically applied by the Database, but as the comment states this is being done 'manually' becuase of a library limitation - That this doesn't have regression tests to ensure that future migrations don't override the definitions in the 0012 migration in various ways, but that seems.... really weird to write a set of tests for, so I think the AI is just being overzealous in calling this out. That's handled with best practices and future code reviews, I've never seen tests that do that. If we want them, sure - more testing and regression enforcement is always good. However that seems non-standard to implement.
Raw Codex output/follow-up conversation:
Details
Verdict: two issues should be addressed before merge.-
[P1] Bug — timestamp contract still diverges from ticket openedx#642.
[learner_status.py:192-193](https://github.com/jesperhodge/openedx-core/pull/22/files)usesmanual_date_time_field(), socreatedandmodifiedare not auto-populated. A normal.objects.create(...)without timestamps fails with a database integrity error, while openedx#642 requiresauto_now_add=Trueandauto_now=True. The acceptance test explicitly codifies the divergence instead of testing the ticket requirement ([lines 39-42](codex://review?pr=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2Fjesperhodge%2Fopenedx-core%2Fpull%2F22&path=tests%2Fopenedx_learning%2Fapplets%2Fcbe%2Ftest_criteria_group_status_acceptance.py&line=39&side=right)). Either implement the ticket contract or formally amend the ticket and document the required caller/API behavior. -
[P2] Bug — the final branch does not contain all promised whole-feature gates.
[test_adr_0002_indexes.py:1](https://github.com/jesperhodge/openedx-core/pull/22/files)covers the ten-index requirement, but the final tree has no equivalent automated gate for applying migrations from scratch or for the ticket’s PII-coverage requirement. Those checks were described as part of this stack, so regressions can pass the reported test suite without satisfying openedx#642’s whole-feature acceptance criteria.
The model relationships, migration dependency, uniqueness constraint, deletion protections, and manual verification instructions otherwise look appropriate. No repository AGENTS.md was present at the reviewed head; I did not run the suite locally.
Can you expand on what is missing with the second bug?
The concern is not that the migration or PII annotations are visibly malformed. It is that the PR claims to complete openedx#642’s whole-feature gates, but the final branch lacks automated protection for two of them.
Ticket openedx#642 requires:
- The complete migration chain to apply cleanly from an empty database.
- All ten ADR-0002 indexes to exist, with the required uniqueness.
make pii_checkto report 100% coverage for the models introduced by the feature.
PR #22 adds [test_adr_0002_indexes.py](https://github.com/jesperhodge/openedx-core/pull/22/files), so the index gate is covered. However, the final tree has no equivalent test or CI gate that would fail when:
- a migration dependency is missing or the migration chain cannot build a fresh database;
- a newly added model loses its
.. no_pii:annotation; - an inappropriate PII annotation such as
consumer_apiis added.
The reported “205 passed” test suite exercises model behavior, but passing those tests does not prove either migration-from-scratch or PII coverage. The PR description contains manual verification claims, but manual verification is not a durable regression guard.
The fix would be to restore or add focused whole-feature gates, or explicitly narrow/update the ticket if those checks are intentionally handled elsewhere.
What do you mean by "gates" in this context?
By “gates,” I meant the ticket’s required verification checks—not a special Django feature.
For openedx#642, the whole-feature gates are:
- migrations apply successfully from a fresh database;
- all ten required indexes exist with the required uniqueness;
make pii_checkreports complete PII annotations.
PR #22 adds an automated test for the index gate. My concern was that the other two were only described as manual verification steps, so a future change could break fresh migrations or PII coverage without the test suite necessarily catching it.
So the finding is about missing durable regression checks, not necessarily that the current migration or model annotations are already broken.

The django-stubs mypy plugin resolves apps.get_model() string literals statically, so looking up a model that must not exist fails the quality job. Scan the app's registered model names instead. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
openedx#642's gate covers every model openedx#613 adds, and openedx#613 adds CompetencyTaxonomy through openedx#640 as well as openedx#641's and openedx#642's models. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com>
Remove the whole-feature gates test module and the no-history and exact-columns tests for StudentCompetencyCriteriaGroupStatus. Explain why the model accepts a lower status written over a higher one. Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Mostly just questions. The model seems fine to me, but I don't understand the value of a number of these tests.

Please either remove this module as a whole, or put some kind of disclaimer in the docstring that this is unusual. I do not want to encourage the practice of putting so much schema detail in an ADR and then testing against it.

Removed the module (openedx#854).

I guess this tests whether we've remembered to seed the database with all our MasteryStatus values?

Pretty much, and test_seed_produces_three_rows_in_rank_order already checks the seed, so I removed this one.

Not really, they mostly restate the model and migration definitions. I removed both the foreign key test and the migration dependency test.
