Author was asked to verify on the new server due to AI bot detection and unusual activity. The author was contacted to re-verify through Captchabot, one of Discord's most widely used onboarding flows. Per server logs, the author attempted verification but did not complete the process — the onboarding flow timed out after one hour per standard behavior. The author is welcome to rejoin through the same process as all other members, as documented in the 'Ethereum Classic Community Discord: Transition to a Modern, Secure Chat Environment' article: https://ethereumclassic.org/blog/2025-11-05-discord-migration |

Thanks @chris-mercer. We do not endorse or condone the usage of such captcha or redirection for server entry verification purposes because, perhaps at least in this case or in breaches, they resemble phishing attempts too closely and they set a poor standard for user experience due to friction. Additionally, we are still awaiting an answer for why precisely that verification status, which I already had from before, randomly dropped off of my account on the same day when I posted the Elysium ECIPs in both servers. A few hours after I posted, I lost verified status and then the post was deleted in your server but not the existing server (which was corroborated by two people in the Discord). We will follow up on the broader Olympia discussion as pertains to possible contention on Olympia or relative to Olympia, per your invitation that people do so in your Github discussion. But so far we have not found that you were accessible in the new server, the extant server, or via direct messages...we hope that at least on the Github discussions we find access and commonality towards building ETC. We do not know if we want to rejoin a second server now or later, given the above thread...it would be ignoring the thread and you were already in the ongoing server but chose to leave. Perhaps a common ground is to keep the brunt of the conversations on Olympia in the ongoing server and Github discussions rather than having it coincide with a new server as well. It is very low effort for you to be in the existing server. We are not sure if we consider your justification for @IstoraMandiri experience to be valid. This is because this applied even to his comments on Github...so the same person is triggering such systems in multiple places? And this coinciding with now another person having some trouble reaching you too, that seems like a pattern...would you consider rejoining the ongoing server as to discuss Olympia and Elysium in there? That is a good way to reestablish a common ground with an olive branch. Alternatively, removing the verification filter on the new server is also a good compromise because if the filtering you have added to the server is working then it should prevent spam while known good accounts migrate without the abrasive verification step requiring permissions. We understand not wanting spam bots but do not see even in the much bigger ongoing server that there is a considerable problem with spam requiring such a strict approach. In any case, our DMs are open if you would like to discuss via DM instead as well. We sent you a friend request on Discord before this all transpired. |
Reverts #1648
This is a precaution since this Discord server address change was recent enough that it may not have had the proper amount of vetting or vetting duration as to ascertain sufficient community buy-in. There has been ongoing discussion about this in the longer running server. In attempting to interface with this new server, some of us have found some concerning obstacles that we do not agree with. Thus we are looking to revert as to continue to keep the pre-existing community Discord server going as the canonical primary destination for anyone interested in ETC while further discussion takes place about the merits of a general server address change.
For example, @IstoraMandiri has had difficulties in what seemed to be a case of speech censorship in the new server, though I never saw him be disrespectful. This even manifested on some Github comments being hidden on a pull request and Istora having to request that comments not be hidden. He was kind in the exchanges I saw (many were hidden though but I have no reason to believe he was any different than I saw him holistically so far). Here is a live example from where you can see them being hidden as spam:

In my case, I originally requested the new Discord server originator's guidance on the sign-up process. It requires verification through a captcha bot flow.
However, this flow is flimsy and it failed to prevent bots and to protect real users. This is because today I was randomly unverified and had to be kicked from the server in order to rejoin and go through that flow if I wanted to be in that server. The only reason provided was that the posts I was making were off. The posts I made were the same content as the ones in the original server, though. And what posts? Well, basically to share draft ECIPs of my project called Elysium, which was shared as ECIPs in both of the ongoing servers while I was not sure which side was open to discussions and ideas:
(Note that these are placeholder ECIP numbers)
ECIP-1110-ELY-FEE: ethereumclassic/ECIPs#568
ECIP-1111-ELY-REV: ethereumclassic/ECIPs#569
ECIP-1112-ELY-COM: ethereumclassic/ECIPs#570
Web: https://logtrees.com/elysium/elysium.html
In Istora's case in that server, he was throttled after some warnings. In my case, I received none for any reason and was simply just unverified. I also learned from someone else that my post about my ECIPs was deleted. This is unfortunate because I cross-posted to both servers as to better understand which side of the ongoing debate about the server split was on a better grounding. While we determine what is the case with these server happenings, I raise this draft to see if we agree in sufficient ETC community representation on the PR and in Discord to perform this revert if only as a temporary precaution on the basis of the conversation in the "legacy" server per this code which is now being reverted. This way at least that can continue to be discussed in the majorly-used server anyway and especially if people are not able to interface with the supposed new server even in good faith efforts to do so. He also appears to have left the longer-running server as well, so this is all just contrary to the nature of what ETC represents on multiple basic philosophical grounds too...
We hope it is misunderstandings and miscommunication and are well-receiving. While we assess, we recommend people continue to use the server that was more accommodating to both groups of this discussion since realistically the mechanical issues with bots have been minimal by comparison with the significant ones I personally encountered with the new server.
