TL;DR

Freed qcow2 clusters now return their space to the host file.

Summary

  • imago is switched to a 0.2.2-based fork (ltstriker/imago, pinned by rev). It punches holes for data clusters whose refcount drops to 0, and flushes refcounts before writing new L1/L2 references. Without that flush, a VM exiting before a flush left an L2 table marked free, and later data overwrote it.
  • DISCARD / WRITE_ZEROES reject guest ranges past the disk end, or ranges whose byte offset would wrap to the start. A discard now deletes host data.

Verification

  • cargo test -p krun-devices --features blk --lib virtio::block: 3 range tests pass. 2 fail with the check removed.
  • imago cargo test: 6 discard tests pass. 4 fail without the fix.

ltstriker and others added 2 commits September 30, 2026 11:45
- Advertise the qcow2 cluster size as discard alignment. qcow2 only frees
whole clusters, so smaller discards were silently dropped.
- Don't advertise DISCARD / WRITE_ZEROES on read-only disks.
- Reject DISCARD / WRITE_ZEROES ranges that extend past the disk.
- Report VIRTIO_BLK_S_UNSUPP for unknown requests and unsupported
  discard/zeroing, instead of IOERR.

Discards may now punch holes into the image file; note that this relies
on the single block worker serialising all requests.

Switch imago to a 0.2.2-based fork that punches holes in the image file
for freed data clusters, and persists refcounts before referencing new
L1/L2 tables.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The imago dependency now uses a specified Git revision. The block worker validates DISCARD and WRITE_ZEROES sector ranges against disk bounds, converts valid ranges to byte ranges, and returns InvalidRange for overflow or out-of-disk ranges. Tests cover valid conversion and both invalid-range cases.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to a0f61

Range validation is covered, but read-only request handling and long-term dependency availability remain bounded risks for merge.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a0f61

The new range checks strengthen protection against destructive requests outside the guest disk. No introduced security defect was established, but the replacement storage library’s read-only enforcement and recovery behavior remain unverified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The evidenced attack surface is guest block-request submission into the configured disk’s host-side storage backend. Source establishes access to that image, not cross-tenant or cross-service reach. Effects on shared clusters or backing images cannot be bounded without the fork implementation.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — The new gate blocks guest ranges that exceed advertised capacity or overflow sector addition before they cross into destructive backend operations. Although byte multiplication is unchecked, the capacity derived from a u64 byte size bounds accepted offsets against multiplication overflow.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The code explicitly ties safe hole punching to one-at-a-time processing with no I/O in flight on the discarded range. Adding queues or workers would require re-evaluating that containment invariant.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Validate the pinned backend’s read-only rejection and cluster-ownership recovery across interrupted, repeated, and partially failed discard operations before treating the worker’s completion status as evidence of safe persistent state.

Reject DISCARD and WRITE_ZEROES when the disk is read-only.

With this change, the device does not advertise VIRTIO_BLK_F_DISCARD or VIRTIO_BLK_F_WRITE_ZEROES for read-only disks. The worker still runs these requests when a guest sends them. The worker also accepts unknown flag bits. The imago image is opened without write access, so the backend probably returns an I/O error. Return VIRTIO_BLK_S_UNSUPP early for these requests when the disk is read-only. That keeps the reported status consistent with the advertised features.

Track the personal fork dependency before release.

The rev pin gives reproducible builds. The dependency still points to a personal fork that is not published on crates.io. If the fork is deleted or rewritten, the build fails. Track the upstream imago PR and switch back to a crates.io release when one ships. Add a comment that references the upstream change.

Add a comment beside the imago dependency in Cargo.toml that references the
upstream PR and notes to switch to a crates.io release once available; retain
the existing pinned revision and features.

Drop the read-only feature and VIRTIO_BLK_S_UNSUPP changes: neither
fixes an observed problem. Move the DISCARD / WRITE_ZEROES range check
into discard_byte_range() and test it, including a sector whose byte
offset would wrap around to the start of the disk.

Advertising the qcow2 cluster size as discard alignment made no
measurable difference to reclaimed space (same result with 512 B and
64 KiB granularity in the guest), so drop it. Pin imago to the commit
that no longer carries the accessor it needed.

Manage the long-term availability of the Git-hosted imago dependency.

Cargo.lock is committed and pins revision 0923b1c9ff3102a9ac57a9615e729c09aa91a5c3. That revision is currently reachable from refs/heads/boxlite/punch-hole. These controls do not vendor the source or ensure future maintenance. If this fork is required long term, upstream the changes or vendor or publish the crate. Otherwise, document when it will be replaced.
