Layout fixes and one improvement for the new home, all from feedback in #1136.

Favorites on 16:9 units. @JLou5641 has a 1280x720 unit at 146 dpi, which Android sees as about 1400x790dp. The home put the favorites and widgets in a column next to the card on any landscape screen from 1100dp wide, so on a 16:9 unit they ended up as a narrow strip beside a mostly empty card. Now they only move beside the card when the screen is also at least 2.2 times wider than tall, like 1920x720. On 16:9 they stay under the card.

Card and bar height outside launcher mode. @andreknieriem noticed that outside launcher mode the card ended short of the driver bar. The favorites area was still visible there with nothing in it, so the gap above it kept taking room. It's now hidden with the rest of the launcher views, and the card lines up with the bar.

Apps and shortcuts in separate tabs. @shreyan-ml asked to split the app shortcuts from the apps in the drawer. The drawer now has Apps and Shortcuts tabs, the same segmented button as Basic and Advanced in Settings, and only shows them when there are shortcuts (launcher mode, Android 7.1 and up). They sit in the toolbar so a short screen keeps its rows of icons, and move under it on screens narrower than 480dp so the title stays. With the shortcuts on their own, two "Search" tiles gave no hint of which app they open, so a shortcut now wears its app's icon as the badge, like Android's own launcher does. "Shortcuts" is translated in every locale.

Tested on emulators:

  • 1280x720 at 146 dpi, with and without launcher mode
  • 1280x800 at 160 and 213 dpi, without launcher mode
  • 1920x720 at 160 and 240 dpi in launcher mode, where the favorites still sit beside the card
  • The drawer at 1560x720 and 400 dpi (shreyan-ml's unit), 1024x600 at 160 dpi, and 480x800 at 240 dpi in portrait, in light, dark and extreme dark, and in German for the longest tab label
  • Android 4.1 at 800x480, with and without launcher mode, where the drawer opens with no tabs since there are no shortcuts

Those are on Android 12L with the app as the default home, plus the 4.1 ones. Testing on a real head unit is still pending: the favorites under the card on a 16:9 unit, the card and the bar ending at the same height outside launcher mode, and the drawer tabs with real shortcuts.

…ard up with the bar outside launcher mode

The favorites only move beside the card on units at least 2.2 times wider than tall, like 1920x720. On a 1280x720 unit the column left them as a narrow strip next to a mostly empty card.

Outside launcher mode the favorites area stayed visible with nothing in it, so the gap above it still took room and the main button ended short of the driver bar.
With shortcuts mixed into the grid a long list of them buried the apps, as reported in andreknieriem#1136. The drawer now has Apps and Shortcuts tabs, the same segmented button as Basic and Advanced in Settings, and only shows them when there are shortcuts. They sit in the toolbar so a short head unit keeps its rows of icons, and under it on a narrow screen so the title stays.

A shortcut now wears its app's icon as the badge, so two Search tiles in the shortcuts tab tell their apps apart.
@andrecuellar andrecuellar changed the title Home: keep the favorites under the card on 16:9 units, and line the card up with the bar Home: favorites under the card on 16:9 units, card lined up with the bar, and drawer tabs for shortcuts Oct 28, 2026
