What was wrong

The sample desktop config put one Idempotency-Key on the MCP connection, so every tool call shared one logical action. An empty key made the gateway refuse the call. A real key made a second, different action replay the first or get refused.

The retry script always minted a new key, never printed it, and exited successfully even when the two calls returned different receipts, a missing receipt, or a tool error. A crash between the two calls could not be retried with the same key, so a rerun charged again. The receipt reader also crashed on a non-object receipt, ignored a top-level receipt, and kept one copy when the copies disagreed.

Why it matters

This example is how a partner checks that a retry returns the original receipt instead of a second charge. As written, a failed or mismatched retry looked successful, and the saved config could not make a second distinct call.

How it was fixed

  • mcp.json now sends only the API key. Each tool call needs its own idempotency key.
  • The script prints the key before the first call, reuses AMW_IDEMPOTENCY_KEY when set, and exits with an error when the retry is not the same successful receipt.
  • Blank, short, or control-character API keys, and blank, too-long, or control-character idempotency keys, are refused before any connection. The API key is not printed.
  • Disagreeing or non-object receipt copies fail closed. A lone top-level receipt is still read. Matching copies still return that one id.
  • QUICKSTART sample output includes the printed key and says a new key is a second charge.

Tests

Added examples/mcp-client/test_call_with_retry.py (19 tests). They load the script offline. No gateway was started.

Before the fix, on the original script:

nice -n 10 /Users/sellers/metacode/fleet/venvs/gw/bin/pytest -q examples/mcp-client/test_call_with_retry.py --tb=line

13 failed, 4 passed in 0.38s

Failures included: mcp.json still had an idempotency key; a top-level-only receipt id was missing; a non-dict receipt raised AttributeError; disagreeing copies returned the first id; blank or bad keys still opened a client; the key was not printed before the call; a saved AMW_IDEMPOTENCY_KEY was ignored; different receipt ids, tool errors, a missing receipt, a blank API key, and a bad saved key did not raise SystemExit.

After the fix, plus two extra exit tests and a tighter check that the printed key is the key that was sent:

nice -n 10 /Users/sellers/metacode/fleet/venvs/gw/bin/pytest -q examples/mcp-client/test_call_with_retry.py --tb=short

19 passed in 0.57s

nice -n 10 /Users/sellers/metacode/fleet/venvs/gw/bin/ruff check examples/mcp-client/call_with_retry.py examples/mcp-client/test_call_with_retry.py --config gateway/ruff.toml

All checks passed!

The two tests added after the first baseline (a retry-only failure, and the same id with different outcomes) follow the same gap already shown: the old main did not raise SystemExit. Those two were not in the 13-failure run.

These tests did not go through ~/metacode/fleet/heavy. The queue had hundreds of waiters and the job never started after about 51 minutes, so it was stopped. The file is an offline unit test under a second.

Notes for the reviewer

Behavior change in the example only. The script now exits nonzero when the retry is not a successful replay of the same receipt, and it honors AMW_IDEMPOTENCY_KEY. mcp.json no longer sends a static idempotency key, so a desktop client makes an unkeyed call unless it sends a key per call. QUICKSTART already says a call with no key is a new charge. No gateway code, auth, or migrations changed. No production risk. A live gateway was not exercised.

Draft PR from the Muse Code QA fleet (instance qa5-am-examples-mcp-client), reviewed by Grok Bot. Not merged or deployed; needs C.Lee's yes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a synchronous Python SDK client for discovering tools, creating permits, invoking tools, and verifying receipts.
    • Added an MCP retry example that reuses an idempotency key and checks that both attempts return matching receipts.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Strengthened wallet and permit ownership checks, request validation, and receipt verification.
    • Improved handling of retries, webhook signatures, and outbound URL safety.
  • Security
    • Cross-origin access is disabled by default; production-like configurations reject wildcard origins.
    • Requests for resources owned by another wallet return not-found responses.
  • Documentation
    • Expanded setup, billing, API-key rotation, testing, and example guidance.

…n main (#87)

* fix(gateway): pin pydantic<2.14 so the permit credit JSON schema keeps its pattern

pydantic 2.14.0 (resolved by unpinned CI installs since fastapi 0.143) no
longer emits the string pattern for the permit credit decimal fields, which
breaks tests/test_permit_numeric_storage.py on main after #4. Pin below 2.14
until the schema is updated for the new behaviour.

* ci(secrets): scan only history reachable from HEAD on push/PR

gitleaks defaults to --all and checkout fetches every branch, so test
fixture keys on unmerged metacode/* draft branches failed the required
gitleaks check on main and every PR. Scheduled/manual runs still scan --all.

Adds scripts/trust_release_gate.sh as a separate 'Trust release gate (non-required)' job outside the CI result aggregate, so the gate's known coverage/OpenAPI-parity failures cannot block unrelated PRs (addresses P1 review). Python 3.12 / gateway failure was a ruff format --check miss in gateway/tests/test_suite_posture_defaults.py, fixed in 2427baf.

* fix(ci): pin pydantic<2.14 and scope gitleaks to HEAD to restore green main (#87)

* sdk: bound shared permit traversal and type idempotency errors

Track completed argument containers while keeping active-ancestor cycle detection. Reject non-string idempotency keys with ValueError before I/O. Add deterministic shared-DAG, deep nesting, cycle, forbidden-field, and zero-send regressions.

* ci: add trust release gate as non-required CI job (SEL-290) (#148)

Adds scripts/trust_release_gate.sh as a separate 'Trust release gate (non-required)' job outside the CI result aggregate, so the gate's known coverage/OpenAPI-parity failures cannot block unrelated PRs (addresses P1 review). Inline comments:
Review comments at @.gitleaks.toml:
- Around line 28-46: Update the allowlist scoped to fake keys in test files and
generated vectors to use Gitleaks’ supported target-rule field, `targetRules`,
instead of `rules`. Keep the `generic-api-key` scope and existing paths
unchanged so other secret-detection rules continue scanning those paths.

Review comments at @examples/README.md:
- Around line 60-61: Update the mcp.json guidance in the README to remove the
stale requirement to set or export AMW_IDEMPOTENCY_KEY. Explain that the
template intentionally omits an idempotency key because a connection header
would reuse it across tool calls, and direct readers to send Idempotency-Key per
call.

Review comments at @gateway/app/services/agent_money.py:
- Around line 167-168: Update each affected test call to AgentMoney.charge to
pass the required keyword-only caller argument, using the appropriate
CallerIdentity for that test.

Review comments at @gateway/app/services/awi_playwright_bridge.py:
- Around line 505-507: Update the exception handling in create_session so a
ValueError indicating that _navigate_to blocked navigation destroys the
partially created session and is re-raised, matching the pre-flight refusal
behavior. Preserve the existing warning and current_url reset for other
navigation failures.

Review comments at @gateway/tests/test_gateway_auth_breakit.py:
- Around line 161-162: Update both wrong-key and expired-token assertions around
get_auth_context to expect FastAPI’s HTTPException and verify its status_code is
401, rather than accepting any exception.

Review comments at @gateway/tests/test_rotate_api_keys.py:
- Line 85: Normalize the captured argparse help output with whitespace
collapsing before checking for the phrase, so terminal-width line wrapping does
not break the assertion; keep the existing expected phrase unchanged.

Review comments at @QUICKSTART.md:
- Line 52: Update the sample output block in QUICKSTART.md to show the outcome:
success suffix for both the first and retry receipts, matching the output format
already used in examples/mcp-client/expected_output.txt and examples/README.md.

Review comments at @sdk/python/src/b2a_sdk/sync_client.py:
- Around line 81-128: Update SyncClient to create and retain one event loop per
instance, and route discover_tools, create_permit, invoke_tool, get_receipt,
verify_receipt, and get_evidence through that loop instead of calling
asyncio.run. Update close to close the async client on the same loop, then close
the loop; keep the implementation compatible with Python 3.10 and the existing
public synchronous API.

# Test suites and generated vectors use clearly-fake keys (lowercase-dash
# placeholders, the documented public test seed). Line-scoped .gitleaksignore
# entries cannot survive the squash-merge workflow — every merge shifts line
# numbers — so scope the generic-api-key rule off these paths instead. Every
# other rule (private key blocks, AMW_* env secrets, high-entropy strings)
# still scans them.

Use targetRules instead of rules.

CI and pre-commit both use Gitleaks v8.30.1. That version defines TargetRules, not Rules, for allowlist scoping. Because rules is ignored, the allowlist has no target rule and becomes global for the listed paths. It can therefore suppress private-key, AMW_* secret, high-entropy, and other findings in those test directories.

Update the allowlist scoped to fake keys in test files and generated vectors to
use Gitleaks’ supported target-rule field, `targetRules`, instead of `rules`.
Keep the `generic-api-key` scope and existing paths unchanged so other
secret-detection rules continue scanning those paths.

Remove the stale ${AMW_IDEMPOTENCY_KEY} guidance for mcp.json.

This PR removes the Idempotency-Key header from examples/mcp-client/mcp.json. The file now holds only ${AGENT_API_KEY}. The text here still says to set a fresh ${AMW_IDEMPOTENCY_KEY} per call, or to export both variables. A reader would follow this and expect the template to carry an idempotency key.

QUICKSTART.md and the call_with_retry.py docstring say the opposite: a connection header pins one key to every tool call. Make this section agree with them.

Update the mcp.json guidance in the README to remove the stale requirement to

Add caller= to the affected test calls.

create_session returns a live session after the navigation guard refuses the URL.

_navigate_to now raises ValueError when check_outbound_url blocks the URL, for example after a DNS rebind. The except Exception block in create_session catches it, logs a warning, and clears current_url. The session stays in self._sessions with its browser context open. create_session returns it as a normal result. The caller cannot tell the target was refused. The refused session also holds one of the max_sessions slots until the TTL expires.

The earlier pre-flight check on Lines 464-466 raises for the same condition. This late check should behave the same way.

Destroy the session and re-raise when the failure is a blocked navigation. Check the callers, such as attach_dom_bridge and test_dns_rebinding_pinning.py, for any code that relies on the current return behavior.

Assert the authentication failure, not any exception.

pytest.raises(Exception) accepts every failure. Examples are a KeyError, a settings error, or an AttributeError from a refactor. If one of these occurs, the wrong-key and expired-JWT tests still pass without proving rejection. The repository test guidelines ask for real authorization-failure tests.

Assert HTTPException with status 401. This matches the tampered-token path in this file.

Normalize whitespace before matching argparse help output.

argparse wraps the description and epilog to the terminal width. It gets that width from shutil.get_terminal_size(), which reads the COLUMNS environment variable. The 52-character phrase can split across a line break at a different width. The assertion then fails on some CI runners and terminals even when the help text is correct.

Collapse whitespace before the substring check. test_docs_reference_integrity.py already does this with " ".join(text.split()).

The sample block on Lines 52-54 shows only the receipt ids. examples/mcp-client/expected_output.txt and examples/README.md already show the outcome: success suffix. Align this block with them.

Review comment at @QUICKSTART.md at line 52:
Update the sample output block in QUICKSTART.md to show the outcome: success
suffix for both the first and retry receipts, matching the output format already
used in examples/mcp-client/expected_output.txt and examples/README.md.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Use one event loop for the lifetime of the client, not one asyncio.run per call.

The constructor creates one httpx.AsyncClient. Each method then calls asyncio.run, which creates a new event loop and closes it when the call ends. The client's connection pool keeps keep-alive connections that belong to that closed loop.

On the next call, such as create_permit after discover_tools, httpx reuses a pooled connection. That connection is tied to the closed loop, so the call fails with RuntimeError: Event loop is closed or a transport error. close() has the same problem when it closes those connections.

The documented flow is discover -> permit -> invoke -> receipt -> evidence. Against a real gateway, that flow fails at the second step. test_sync_client.py uses httpx.MockTransport, which opens no sockets, so the tests do not catch this.

Fix: give the wrapper its own event loop and run every call on it. asyncio.Runner needs Python 3.11, but the package declares >=3.10, so use new_event_loop() directly.

🐛 Proposed fix: one loop per client
         self._client = AgentMiddlewareClient(
             api_key,
             base_url=base_url,
             timeout=timeout,
             transport=transport,
             bearer_token=bearer_token,
         )
+ # httpx pools connections per event loop. One loop for the client's
+ # lifetime keeps pooled connections usable between calls.
+        self._loop = asyncio.new_event_loop()
+
+    def _run(self, coro):
+        return self._loop.run_until_complete(coro)
@@
     def discover_tools(self) -> list[ToolDefinition]:
-        return asyncio.run(self._client.discover_tools())
+        return self._run(self._client.discover_tools())
@@
     def close(self) -> None:
-        asyncio.run(self._client.close())
+        if self._loop.is_closed():
+            return
+        try:
+            self._run(self._client.close())
+        finally:
+            self._loop.close()

Make the same asyncio.run → self._run change in create_permit, invoke_tool, get_receipt, verify_receipt, and get_evidence. Add a test that makes two calls through a real httpx.AsyncHTTPTransport to a local server, so that a pooled connection is reused.

Review comment at @sdk/python/src/b2a_sdk/sync_client.py around lines 81 - 128:
Update SyncClient to create and retain one event loop per instance, and route
discover_tools, create_permit, invoke_tool, get_receipt, verify_receipt, and
get_evidence through that loop instead of calling asyncio.run. Update close to
close the async client on the same loop, then close the loop; keep the
implementation compatible with Python 3.10 and the existing public synchronous
API.
