fix(gateway): keep the admin key out of approvals CLI errors - #226
Bug: if the API key env var contains a newline, h11's error quotes the header, and the CLI's except httpx.HTTPError handler printed exc, sending the key to stderr.
Fix (gateway/scripts/amw_approvals.py):
_read_api_key rejects keys containing any C0 (U+0000–U+001F), DEL (U+007F) or C1 (U+0080–U+009F) control character, exiting with a fixed message that never includes the value, before any client is built.
Every except path prints a fixed message, at most with type(exc).__name__; no exc, str(exc) or repr(exc).
Tests (data-free): keys built at runtime with secrets.token_hex with \n, \r, \x85 and \x7f injected; each asserts a clean exit, no request, and that no substring of the key appears in stdout or stderr. A forced httpx.ConnectError whose message contains the key asserts the key is not printed.
Local: 125 passed (approvals CLI, gate, router); ruff and mypy clean. No migration.
Note
Medium Risk
Touches bootstrap admin key handling and CLI error paths for a local security-sensitive tool; behavior changes for malformed env keys and gateway responses but reduces credential disclosure risk.
Overview
Hardens the AMW approvals CLI (gateway/scripts/amw_approvals.py) so the bootstrap admin key from VALID_API_KEYS never appears on stdout/stderr, following up on a leak where newline-containing keys could end up in quoted HTTP header errors printed from except httpx.HTTPError.
Key loading:_read_api_key now rejects keys with C0/DEL/C1 control characters (after strip) via _has_control_chars, exiting with a fixed message that never echoes the secret; trailing whitespace/newlines around the key in the env var are still stripped and accepted.
Errors and responses:list, approve, and deny no longer print raw exceptions—handlers use fixed strings and at most type(exc).__name__ or HTTP status codes. Gateway JSON is validated (_is_pending_item, non-empty string status on decide, safe deadline formatting via _format_time) with generic “non-JSON” / “unexpected response” messages so malformed bodies cannot drive unsafe output.
Tests: Broad CLI coverage with runtime-generated keys, _assert_no_key_leak, mocked transports, and cases for control-char rejection, transport/HTTP failures, and bad JSON shapes.

Reject API keys with C0, DEL or C1 control characters using a fixed message, and print only fixed messages (at most the exception class name) in every CLI error path, so h11 header errors can no longer echo the key to stderr.

It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The approvals CLI rejects API keys containing C0, DEL, or C1 control characters and reports invalid-key errors with a fixed message. List and decision commands distinguish request failure types, handle non-JSON responses, and reject unexpected JSON shapes. Tests cover these cases across list, approve, and deny commands, including checks for key leakage and tracebacks.
The PR is otherwise mergeable, but the unreachable-gateway test should use a deterministic mocked connection failure.
Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to b194d
The change reduces credential disclosure through CLI errors without expanding administrative privileges, request destinations, or approval authority. No material security risk introduced or worsened by this PR was identified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The security-relevant change is bounded to the existing privileged CLI’s handling of environment credentials and gateway responses. It does not add a credential recipient or change the server-side scope of approval authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The gateway, rather than CLI response validation, remains the approval-authority boundary. Approve and deny require loopback access and bootstrap-admin authorization before invoking the store. Successful database decisions produce the supported approved or denied status.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Approval transitions remain conditional on pending, unexpired state, allowing one concurrent decision and rejecting repeated decisions. Losing a response after commit can still leave the CLI reporting failure while the server holds a terminal decision; that ambiguity predates the PR. The new handlers neither retry nor reverse the committed state. No dedicated commit-before-response fault-injection test was available.

Reviewed head 87fb6a4 (full diff, every except/print path in gateway/scripts/amw_approvals.py). Ran tests/test_amw_approvals_cli.py locally: 43 passed. Codex read-only review run; findings judged below.
Key-leak fix: good._read_api_key rejects C0/DEL/C1 with a fixed message that never includes the value; main() catches it before any request. The ValueError, InvalidURL and HTTPError handlers in cmd_list/_decide no longer print exception text. _client re-raises with fixed text (from None). Tests build keys with token_hex and check for 8-char substrings.
Blocking (useful non-secret context lost):
HTTPStatusError from raise_for_status() (cmd_list ~L183, _decide ~L230) now prints only gateway request failed (HTTPStatusError). The operator can no longer tell 401/403 (wrong key) from 500. Print exc.response.status_code (an int, no URL or exception text) for HTTPStatusError.
test_status_error_hides_key raises ConnectError from raise_for_status, so it doesn't exercise the real HTTPStatusError path. Use a real httpx.HTTPStatusError with a 401 response, and assert the status code is shown and the key isn't.
Non-blocking:
The connect-failure message dropped args.base_url. It's non-secret (already validated) and helps diagnose a wrong host. Consider restoring it.
response.json() (L189, L236) sits outside the handlers, so a non-JSON body gives a traceback. It's the gateway body, not the key, but a fixed error: unexpected gateway response would be cleaner.
Codex flagged that _refusal_reason echoes the host/scheme/port in the refusal. That's user-supplied URL text, not the env key. I don't consider it a key echo, but a follow-up could avoid echoing the raw host.
…s CLI
Print only the numeric status on HTTPStatusError, strip the key before the control-character check, show the validated base_url on connect failure, and handle non-JSON responses with a fixed message.

Delta review of 9cfbe7d + main merge (b194dae). All three FAIL points from 87fb6a4 are fixed:
HTTPStatusError prints gateway request failed: HTTP <code> in list, decide and the post-404/403 raise_for_status path.
A real 401 via MockTransport asserts HTTP 401 is printed and no key fragment is.
The key is stripped before the control-character check (:140), and a trailing-newline test was added.
Key leak audit: no path prints the VALID_API_KEYS value. Errors use fixed strings, the status code, or type(exc).name. Exception messages are never printed, a bad key gives a fixed message, and the key is read only after URL refusal. Non-JSON, non-object and malformed payloads exit 1 with fixed messages.
Merge: git show --remerge-diff is empty, so it touches no PR files.
Tests: tests/test_amw_approvals_cli.py, 67 passed.
Non-blocking: the TransportError message echoes the raw --base-url. That is operator input, not the key, but consider redacting URL userinfo (user:pass@) in a follow-up.

16af061 is test-only (gateway/tests/test_amw_approvals_cli.py). test_unreachable_gateway_error_hides_key now uses httpx.MockTransport raising ConnectError with the key in the message, against https://example.com (RFC 2606), so it opens no real socket. It still asserts 'gateway unreachable at', that base_url is shown, and _assert_no_key_leak on stdout and stderr.
Merge 5f6ebff (main d8ade3e, #211): git show --remerge-diff is empty, and the merge touches neither PR file (amw_approvals.py, test_amw_approvals_cli.py).
