@Siddhesh2377 — quick PR for you to take forward.

Two problems found setting up Claude Code through wally on a Mac

1. wally update to 0.8.5 fails on a Mac without Homebrew.
The 0.8.5 macOS bottle ships an empty lib/, and bin/wally links /opt/homebrew/opt/{openssl@3,brotli,zstd} by absolute path:

dyld: Library not loaded: /opt/homebrew/opt/openssl@3/lib/libcrypto.3.dylib
error: wally cannot start

The installer rolled back, so the user stayed on 0.8.3. Any new user without Homebrew hits this on first install.
Fix: scripts/build/bundle-macos-dylibs.sh copies those libraries (and their transitive deps) into the bottle's lib/, rewrites install names to @rpath, and fails if anything still points at Homebrew. package-wally.sh runs it before the existing rpath/codesign step. The binary already carries @executable_path/../lib.

2. wally claude-code ignored wally's endpoint when ~/.claude/settings.json pins one.
prepare_claude_config_dir copies the reader's settings.json verbatim. Claude Code applies that file's env block over the process environment, so a pinned ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL / ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN replaced the ones wally sets, and Claude Code talked to the old gateway.
Fix: without_gateway_env drops ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL, ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN and ANTHROPIC_API_KEY from the copy. Other settings pass through; non-JSON is copied unchanged.

Verified

  • Took the real 0.8.5 bottle, ran the bundling script on it (libs sourced from an existing local copy), ad-hoc signed, and it launches: wally 0.8.5, about and account whoami work with no Homebrew on the machine.
  • Shell syntax checked (bash -n).

Not verified, please check in CI

  • The Rust change and its two new unit tests were not compiled or run; the machine used has no Rust toolchain or CMake.
  • The script was not run end to end through package-wally.sh or a real release build.
  • Bundled openssl (Apache-2.0), brotli (MIT) and zstd (BSD/GPL dual) licences are not yet copied into the bottle the way the Linux path does for libgomp etc. Worth adding before release.
  • Release needs a new tag; 0.8.5 as published is still broken for no-Homebrew users.

Summary by cubic

Fixes the macOS bottle so it launches without Homebrew, and keeps wally's endpoint in wally claude-code when the reader's settings pin their own gateway.

macOS bottle
The 0.8.5 bottle linked Homebrew's openssl@3, brotli, and zstd by absolute path with an empty lib/, so any Mac without Homebrew failed at launch, including during wally update. bundle-macos-dylibs.sh copies those libraries and their transitive deps into the bottle's lib/, rewrites install names to @rpath, and aborts if anything still points at Homebrew; package-wally.sh runs it before signing.

claude-code endpoint
prepare_claude_config_dir copied the reader's settings.json verbatim, and Claude Code applies that file's env block over the process environment, silently replacing wally's endpoint. The copy now drops ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL, ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN, and ANTHROPIC_API_KEY; other settings and non-JSON files pass through unchanged. Because project settings outrank the process env, the launch also passes --settings pointing at a private per-run file (0600, removed on exit) that pins wally's endpoint, unless the user passed their own --settings.

The bundled openssl (Apache-2.0), brotli (MIT), and zstd (BSD/GPL) licenses aren't yet copied into the bottle the way the Linux path does.

Written for commit 6e63247. Summary will update on new commits.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The macOS packaging flow now bundles linked Homebrew dylibs into the staged package. Editor settings refresh now removes gateway variables from settings.json before writing it.

Changes

macOS dylib bundling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Bundle dylibs during macOS packaging
scripts/build/bundle-macos-dylibs.sh, scripts/build/package-wally.sh
The script resolves and copies linked dylibs, rewrites references to use @rpath, and checks for remaining Homebrew dependencies. The macOS packaging branch runs it on the staged bottle.

Editor settings refresh

Layer / File(s) Summary
Filter gateway variables during settings refresh
src/commands/cmd_editors.rs
The filtering helper removes the three gateway variables from valid object-valued env fields and leaves other inputs unchanged. The refresh writes the filtered settings, and tests cover filtering and unchanged-input cases.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 6e632

The macOS package may retain Homebrew library dependencies, Homebrew installation currently fails checksum validation, and a settings-write failure can leave Claude without wally’s endpoint pin. Resolve or explicitly accept these risks before merging.

The macOS bottle linked openssl@3, brotli and zstd by /opt/homebrew path and
shipped an empty lib/, so a Mac without Homebrew failed at launch (and wally
update rolled back on its own post-install check). Bundle those libraries and
point the binary at them through @rpath.

wally claude-code copied the reader's settings.json verbatim into its own
config dir. Claude Code applies the `env` block of settings over the process
environment, so a pinned ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL in the reader's settings silently
replaced wally's endpoint. Drop the gateway variables from the copy.
