Background
Recent improvements to contour map visualization in ResInsight have made it possible to display contour maps directly in a 3D view. The implementation includes several very useful display options:
- Show Map Surface on/off
- Display contour lines only, or contour lines together with color shading
- Project Surface on Geometry, which drapes the contour map onto the active 3D geometry
These capabilities significantly improve interpretation and presentation of contour map results.
Request
It would be extremely useful to provide the same visualization options for imported surfaces.
Proposed Enhancement
For imported surfaces, add support for:
- Show Surface on/off
- Allow users to display only contour lines, or contour lines together with the colored surface.
- Project Surface on Geometry
- Allow imported surfaces to be draped onto the currently displayed 3D geometry, similar to the functionality available for contour maps.
Use Cases
- Displaying geological horizons together with simulation results.
- Comparing imported structural maps with reservoir geometry.
- Visualizing uncertainty surfaces and interpretation products in a more realistic 3D context.
- Creating clearer presentations and screenshots where surface information should follow the underlying reservoir geometry.
Benefits
- Provides a consistent user experience between contour maps and imported surfaces.
- Enhances visualization and interpretation workflows.
- Improves the ability to integrate external geological and geophysical data with simulation models.
- Reduces the need for workarounds when presenting imported surfaces in 3D views.
Additional Notes
The required functionality already exists for contour maps, so extending the same concepts and display options to imported surfaces would make the visualization framework more consistent and significantly increase the value of imported surface data within ResInsight.
