210-210: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick winAppend sizes in place instead of copying the array for each key.
Line 210 builds a new array from every existing size each time it records one key. For one stratum, total copying grows with n²/2. At
SAMPLE_HARD_CAP(50,000), that is about 1.25×10⁹ element copies. This CPU cost counts against the 60-second sampling deadline. The single-type heavy-tail extension path is the most exposed. Every caller reads sizes throughsizesOf, so mutating the stored array in place is safe.♻️ Proposed fix

Taking a second, harder look at the statistics, I think this needs changes before merge. The measurement engine is well-built and the common cases (homogeneous, mixed, moderate heavy-tail) are accurate, but the headline "95% CI" is unreliable on one of the most common real Valkey workloads: a keyspace with one or a few dominating big keys.
The heavy-tail widening (size-estimator.ts:50-52) is gated on sample-observed skewness via isHeavyTailed, which is structurally blind to keys that were never sampled. If the sample happens to contain only small keys, sampleVariance is 0, skewness is 0, so ciTrusted is true and extend() (stratified-sampler.ts:112) stops at the ~4k budget. The CI then reads ~0 around an estimate that can be 100x low, with no partial flag set.
Concrete repro: single string type, dbSize=50_000, 49,999 keys at 100 B and one key at 512 MB. The 4k sample misses the giant ~92% of the time; in those runs total reads ~5 MB vs a real ~517 MB. Monte Carlo over the actual formulas (500 trials) gives ~0.6% coverage, not 95%. The tool would recommend a ~5 MB node for a 517 MB keyspace and report high confidence.
The unit tests don't catch this because fake-keyspace.ts returns SCAN results in insertion order and the specs place special keys at regular modular indices, so the pilot effectively does systematic sampling that always includes the big keys. The random-miss behavior real SCAN produces is never exercised.
Requests: (1) widen the CI based on the unsampled fraction 1 - n/dbSize independent of observed skewness, so a tight CI can't sit around a mostly-unsampled keyspace; (2) add a validation scenario with rare dominating keys; (3) drive the sampler tests with randomized (not insertion-ordered) SCAN so coverage is actually tested. Happy to re-review quickly once the CI reflects unsampled-tail risk.
- estimate() takes an optional key memory ceiling and widens the CI to the bytes the sample cannot explain whenever the keyspace was not fully sampled, so a missed dominating key cannot hide behind a tight interval - keyMemoryCeiling() derives the ceiling from used_memory_dataset plus the dict entry MEMORY USAGE counts per key - Fake SCAN returns keys in a seeded shuffle instead of insertion order - Add a rare-giant validation scenario (coverage only) and report the widest CI per scenario in the harness Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- ProjectionInputs takes the measured bytesPerDay; growth the key count does not explain (values growing in place) is added linearly - The band is the sampled ci95Bytes at day 0, scaled with the key count, replacing the re-derived simple-random-sampling margin Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- ProjectionInputs.inPlaceBytesPerDay replaces bytesPerDay, so editing the key rate no longer re-attributes the measured byte trend - inPlaceGrowth() derives it from the measured key and byte slopes Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Re-reviewed the fix (commit 26a4f30) and the blocker is genuinely resolved. Approving.
estimate() now floors the CI at the bytes the sample cannot explain, derived from the server's own used_memory_dataset ceiling, which accounts for the giant key's bytes even when the sampler never draws it. I reran the original repro (50,000 keys, one 512 MB giant, 4k budget) against the branch source: the seeded-shuffle SCAN misses the giant in ~39 of 40 seeds (so the miss is actually exercised now, which insertion-order never did), and coverage is 40/40 with the ceiling versus 1/40 without it. That 1/40 was exactly the old "tight CI around a 100x-low estimate" failure. The + keys*24 in keyMemoryCeiling() is correct accounting-basis alignment (used_memory_dataset excludes the per-key dict entry that MEMORY USAGE includes), not a double-count. The new rare-giant validation scenario and the "misses the key on some scan orders" assertion lock the regression in.
Two things to keep in mind as this gets wired to the production/cluster path (not blocking here, since there is no service consumer on this branch yet): memoryCeiling is optional, so a future caller that forgets it silently reverts to the old tight-CI behavior (consider making it required), and in cluster mode the single global ceiling must be the sum of used_memory_dataset across primaries or it will under-bound. The two pre-existing nits also still stand (validate.ts has no require.main === module guard, and splitBudget can sum a few keys over the cap). None block. Nice fix.
- Treat a nonempty node with no measured strata as unsampled - Widen the interval when the estimate exceeds the ceiling - Fail seeding when any pipelined write is rejected Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Run on a throwaway redis-server 8.10.2:
rare-giantis 49,999 keys of 100 B plus one 64 MB key. The sample usually misses the giant key, so the point estimate is far off by design. The scenario checks only that the CI still covers the true size. The fake SCAN in the unit tests now returns keys in a seeded shuffle, so missing a rare key is exercised there too.Stack

New statistical sampling against live Valkey/Redis could mis-estimate memory if bugs slip past tests; impact is limited here because only CLI validation uses it, but later API/UI will depend on this core.
