Changes to enable reading timeseries data.

There is a change to be made to allow reading of time-series data which alters the logic in the verification of the file when reading / writing.
As such it is impossible to test the myriad of use cases from the real world. Whilst this change has not caused problems or failed tests. Testing the branch is recommended if this causes you concern.
Also please be aware of this change if you get unexpected results after the change has been committed.
